The lecture is using fragments of shows from the Theatre of Death series and the artist’s theoretical writings (especially the Milanese Lessons, 1988). The objective will be to identify space as the basic category in Kantor’s artistic work and to define the creative method he used differentiating into Real Space (which contributed to his shows’ storylines), the Space of Memory (as the only subjective reality made present in theatre), Interpersonal Space (created by the conflict between the stage and the audience, between illusion and reality) and, finally, Space as Pre Matter which, according to Kantor, gives rise to all form – artistic and non artistic, human and non human, real and unreal, life and death.
