Anka Herbut
Resistance Movements

In her research project Anka Herbut investigated the tools and strategies of resistance used in the work of Polish choreographers, reflecting on what bodies do and what movement and production practices they use to express resistance. Herbut would look at dance as a practice of reformatting the body, focusing not only on how bodily, individual and social identities are produced in the field of choreography and how ethnicity, gender, class and sexuality are constructed, but also on the ways in which existing contexts and working tools are undermined, negotiated and changed. Based on the assumption that choreography deciphers social tensions, analyzes and reworks them, designing alternative scenarios, the researcher also focused on the relationship between social choreography and protests in public space and choreographic actions using resistance as an artistic strategy. She referenced historical and experimental movement forms related to the fields of martial arts, queer culture, and street dance, among others.

Combining dramaturgical practice and theoretical approach, Herbut explored not only the theoretical aspects of the issues, but also the creative process and practical solutions. The scholarship resulted in a series of texts and interviews with female choreographers and choreographers (published on www.dwutygodnik.com), as well as in a zine (both in electronic and physical publication form).
