In teaching improvisation, Andrew Morish uses a “skills and spirit” approach. “We will engage in the engagement skills needed to discover content in breath, voice, movement and imagination, and then reinforce those skills with the spirit of communication needed to engage the audience. We will begin by working on movement and then add voice, breath, and imagination. We will continually address the spirit of communication as motivation in making choices.” Through this process, participants develop skills in generating and shaping content while working between physical and voice modes. The workshop is also designed to develop a particular form of feedback that becomes a support during performance. The combined elements will create a thought-provoking practice that the artist believes is essential in developing the coherence of solo improvisation. Participants are encouraged to be their own reviewers during performance using the skills of shifting attention, developing structure, and maintaining clarity of delivery.
