Tiedo Wilschut – Workshops for professionals – Lightening workshop

“In good lighting design, light should not just >>light<< the artists, but should be an essential part of the performance. This can only be achieved through intensive collaboration with the director or choreographer and the designers early on, when there is still room for change, so that the final performance is a fusion of all disciplines. When designing lighting, I like to go outside the box. In my work I don’t settle for the most obvious effects, but try to discover the true essence of a given moment in a performance and consider the best possible ways of emphasizing it in order to tell a story with light. Light in its broadest sense is the ability to use any light source in any way possible.”

Spazio Ligh Design Workshop

Good lighting design is only possible when there is significant interaction between the lighting designer and the technical designer and the director or choreographer. For this interaction to be possible, it is important that the designer and the other creators (set designer, costume designer…) understand the languages they are using. I believe that a choreographer has to know what it means to dance, but does not have to be a perfect dancer himself. It is the same with light – a choreographer does not have to be a lighting designer, but he or she needs to understand the mindset of the designer or maker and know what the technical possibilities and limitations are in order to communicate and collaborate fruitfully with these people. In this workshop, participants will learn the possibilities and impossibilities of theatrical lighting in order to understand the language of light. After two weeks, they should be able to create a simple lighting design on their own and know how to explain it to a performer. Together we will work to develop your personal thoughts on how light affects you and how it can bring a new layer to your productions.
