A performance inspired by Samuel Beckett’s one-act play
“The expression of spirituality is represented by art (symbolized by dance, among other things) and philosophy (symbolized by thinking aloud), and the content that is expressed in these forms, however sad they may be, is never as extreme as the brief song of the body. The second form of compensating for the injustice that spirituality suffers from the disembodied body is the ability to leave some kind of trace behind. The body leaves behind something extremely ephemeral, a remnant in the form of a skeleton. Spirituality, meanwhile, leaves behind something more permanent, something that is embraced and assimilated by humanity, is likely to achieve a longer life, at least in culture.”
S.Beckett
The presented Beckett’s philosophy of man inspired us to work on an original project based on the one-act play “The Square” – a piece for four performers, light and live music. This performance is a personal continuation of the playwright’s thoughts, expanded by the technique of contemporary dance and new interpretative possibilities, which the author himself did not foresee. We wanted “Square. Version 6” was a spectacle in which S. Beckett’s mathematical consistency was spiced up with strong, physical, almost organic dance and to surprise the audience not only with its increasing dynamics but also with live music and contemporary light design.
