Alicja Morawska-Rubczak – b. 1983, Ph.D. student at the Department of Literary Aesthetics of the Faculty of Polish and Classical Studies of Adam Mickiewicz University, works on a doctoral dissertation on the aesthetics of contemporary children’s theatre, conducts research on theatre for children in Poland and other states of the Baltic Sea. In September 2011 she begins studies of contemporary dance at Copenhagen University. She completed cum laude cultural studies and Polish studies at Poznań University; in the academic year 2007/2008 she studied Polish at Nicolas Copernicus University within the MOST program. There she also took a two-year graduate course in theatre studies. Holder of e.g. the Scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, of the Kulczyk Family Foundation, of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in the area of theatre, twice a beneficiary of a program of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute “Polish Culture in the World” (support for visits to Japan and Denmark).
Researcher and great enthusiast of theatre for children, especially for the youngest audience (aged from a few months up to 3 years) and puppet theatre. An author of numerous texts on theatre criticism, theory of children’s theatre, puppet theatre, and the performing arts; she has published in Teatr Lalek, Didaskalia, Dialog, Teatr, Scena, Pro Arte, reviewed performances within the project New Critical Force (Nowa Siła Krytyczna), of which she is now a co-editor. To date she has been regarded as the only Polish specialist and theoretician on theatre for children up to 3 years of age. She has taken part in many conferences in Poland and abroad, delivering papers and lectures on art for children, puppet theatre and theory of contemporary theatre.
As a curator of theatre projects for children, she cooperates with the Art Stations Foundation, Z. Raszewski Theatre Institute in Warsaw, e.g. as a curator and initiator of the Warsaw Theatre Encounters, Teatr Animacji in Poznań, where as of this years she has been in charge of the art events of the International Festival of Contemporary Plays for Children and Young People KON-TEKSTY. She collaborates on an ongoing basis with the Children’s Art Centre in Poznań and is a specialist on artistic actions for children in the Poznań Nuova Foundation. In recent years she has also cooperated with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw and the Poznań Foundation of the Malta International Theatre Festival. She is actively involved in the worldwide promotion of Polish theatre for children by organizing a Showcase of Polish Theatre for Children and taking part in numberless festivals and conferences, e.g. in Japan, Denmark and Italy. She is internationally recognised in circles of children’s theatre as a person committed to the development and promotion of Polish theatre for the very young.
She has been in charge of numerous projects on theatre education, especially those focusing on contemporary plays for children and young people, such as Reading Stage (Children’s Art Centre in Poznań, R@aport Festival Gdynia) and workshops for playwrights (Festival of World Premieres in Bydgoszcz), a moderator of projects Summer at the Theatre (Lato w Teatrze) and Artistic Holidays (Artystyczne Wakacje).
