From 18th to 21st October 2006 Old Brewery Gallery witnessed the Ethnographic Films Review organised by the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
The films that were presented during the review included breakthrough and pioneer works in visual anthropology, as well as modern experiments. The program consisted of short films based on fictional events, but still telling a lot about the local folklore, as well as film monographs on distant tribes. Well known and prize-winning films could be seen, but also nearly amateur works.
The review had a didactic purpose; it was aimed at popularizing the genre of ethnographic film but also at answering the question of “What is it that makes an ethnographic film?” – something that arouses a lot of controversy among the cultural anthropology community. This very question, broad as it is, was the review’s motto and a topic for discussion with guests which crowned the review.
Special guests of the event were: Barbara Keifenheim, Elżbieta Dziuk and Andrzej Różycki.
