“I am speaking here not as an academic teacher, but as a person who writes about art,” is how Professor Maria Poprzecka began the lecture part of Art in Practice. For years, the professor has been an authority in both fields – as an educator she has produced multitudes of art historians, as a writer – dozens of books, which are read not only by professionals, but also by enthusiasts fascinated by the visual side of reality. The topic of the class was one of the biggest challenges facing an art historian or an employee of art institutions in their academic and professional careers: translating the experience of interacting with art into words. Translating the “visual” into the “verbal” only seems easy on the surface. Assimilating the terminology, names and terms created for art history is helpful in the process of writing about art only seemingly.
