Underscore is an improvisational structure, that Nancy Stark Smith has been developing since
1990 and it is practiced all over the world.
Underscore offers tools and strategies that involve contact improvisation in the wider context of
dance improvisation. Those tools allow to develop freedom of dancing in the spherical space -
independently and with others, support combining kinesthetic and compositional issues during
improvisation. Underscore allows you to express the full spectrum of energy, physical forms and
states.

Underscore practice usually lasts around 3 to 4 hours and it is developing through a variety of
dynamics, including periods of quiet private internalized activities and high energy moments and
dance interaction.

In order to participate, you must take part in the introduction. The introduction is compulsory for
people who previously have not participated in Underscore and recommended for others.
You also have to be on time and stay until the end. It is worth taking a notebook and/or
something to draw.

Natalia is a dancer, performer, movement researcher and contact improvisation teacher based
in Warsaw, Poland. Fascinated by Underscore since the first encounter in 2011. She studied
with Nancy Stark Smith and is involved in investigating and sharing US in various contexts.
