Dressage competitions do exist. These are riding competitions, where very elegantly clad riders force horses to make very intense and very unnatural effort. For the most important thing is the round arena adorned with colourful ribbons. Right in the centre. Competition is under way. There are no winners.
The solo piece ‘Królik, śmierć i konkurs ujeżdżenia’ is formally ascetic. It is characterised by sparing movement and scanty space: the plot is set inside an arena lit with fluorescent lamps with spectators seated around it. In the arena, Rafał Dziemidok was able to create a strange, surreal world divided into three distinct parts, of which the most interesting (and most dance-like) is the one about dying. We face death, both metaphorically, and literally, at arm’s length.
