We warmly invite you to The Music Academy of Poznan for an open meeting with American composer and clarinetist Evan Ziporyn, one of the founding members of the group Bang on a Can All-Stars, and a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Evan Ziporyn will be the guest of the second in a series of meetings entitled “Music With Voltage Invites”, organized by The Electroacoustic Music Studio at The Music Academy of Poznan. The meeting with the artist will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. in the building of the Academy (Sw. Marcin St 87). On the same day, at 8:00 p.m. he is going to perform in a concert organized by Art Stations Foundation in Stary Browar.

Evan Ziporyn, a composer and clarinetist, a co-founder of the famous New York-based group Bang on a Can All-Stars, with whom he has toured the globe since 1992. He was also a member of the Steve Reich Ensemble. As composer/clarinetist he has collaborated with such artists as Brian Eno, Yo-Yo Ma, Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Meredith Monk, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Louis Andriessen, Cecil Taylor, Tan Dun, Kronos Quartet.

In his compositions he crosses cultural boundaries, combining traditional gamelan sound with saxophones, guitars, electronics, African ethnic instruments, and full orchestra. He has created a number of fusion works, e.g. an opera “Shadow Bang” (in collaboration with master Balinese dalang Wayan Wija, 2006), “Sulvasutra” for string quartet, pipa, and tabla (commissioned by the Silk Road Yo-Yo-Ma Project), “Eel Bone” for string quartet (commissioned by Kronos Quartet), and numerous compositions for solo clarinet, clarinet and electronics, gamelan, or orchestra, as well as other non-standard ensembles. He is also an author of arrangements (e.g. Briana Eno’s “Music for Airports 2”). He is Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Founder and Artistic Director of Boston’s Gamelan Galak Tika, a group dedicated to new music for Balinese gamelan.
Evan Ziporyn is currently working on a multimedia opera, which is to be premiered in Bali with Beng on a Can All-Stars and full gamelan on the Indonesian island of Bali in June 2009.
