When he was 20 years old he left his native Finland to study in France, where he later worked with French and Belgian companies. From 1997-99 he danced in Paris with Carolyn Carlson and then in Belgium with Wim Vandekeybus’ company Ultima Vez (in new productions Inasmuch the life is borrowed, Inspite of wishing and wanting and revivals of cult choreographies What the body doesn’t remember and Les Porteuses des Mauvaises Nouvelles. In the meantime he continued his pedagogical work and, with Fabrice Lambert, founded Cie l’Expérience Harmaat in 1997, with whom he created a number of performances (Etude pour 4 mouvements, Ethogramme, 4 propositions pour un solo). In 2001 he founded his own ensemble Cie Juha Marsalo. Solo Shocking (prepared for June Events Paris 2004) is the last part of a trilogy which includes earlier duets: Isä (2001) with Es’ ‘Robina Simonen (popular Finnish singer), and Oiva (2002) with Hugo Laruffa (Argentinian painter).
