The annual scholarship (founded by Grażyna Kulczyk for the foundation’s 10th anniversary in 2015) has been created in the spirit of the foundation’s motto – “Art does not need support, ARTISTS DO!” – aligning with the mission of supporting Polish choreography development, and drawing inspiration from the 50/50 idea (equal parts art and education) governing all Grażyna Kulczyk’s endeavors.
Establishing a scholarship has been deemed necessary and given importance to deep exploration in contemporary choreography in efforts to enrich reflection in the choreographic field. The scholarship has become a symbol of faith in choreography art development as a complex long-term process demanding consistent and comprehensive support. It has pointed to experimentation, intellectual growth and (self-)reflection as a means to artistic progress. The scholarship has promoted researchers and artists whose practice mostly focused on creating a discourse around choreography as an artform, ready to perceive choreography in an ever-expanding context of artistic and social reality; those willing to seek out (and form) their own strategies, solutions and methodology in choreography practice, theoretical reflection and, above all, in the difficult art of communicating and spreading knowledge about choreography to the larger public.
The intention behind the scholarship was not only to invest in the growth of its beneficiaries, but also to bring awareness to the newest phenomena in the art of choreography. That is why sharing the work and research results not only with professionals, but foremost with a broader audience, was always the tangible outcome of the scholarship (and a requirement to receive it).
In the year of 2021, marked by the pandemic, the Art Stations Foundation also granted 5 creative scholarships for female artists and projects focusing on choreography in its expanded form (possible to practice despite pandemic).
