Poznań’s Stary Browar (The Old Brewery of Poznań) has been reconstructed and was re-opened around the end of 2003. Since that moment it has became one of the city’s shopping, architectural and cultural attractions. The complex comprises a commercial part (a shopping mall) and a cultural part with Dziedziniec Sztuki (The Courtyard of Arts) as its heart.
The year 2004 was a special period. That year, in Stary Browar, I managed to create a place where art meets business. My activities over the years stem from the deepest belief that creation is what colors reality’s grayness, what provokes reflection, what moves. So, when the opportunity to restore the historic, XIXth century Hugger’s Brewery arose, I enthusiastically began to work towards my goal. The way the architects, Piotr Z. Barełkowski and Przemysław Borkowicz, shaped the buildings was a work of art all on its own.
A summary on the foundation’s activity in its first year (2004) by Grażyna Kulczyk – Art Stations Foundation Calendar
I came there on a sunny day and I found the place magical. I felt like I entered a different world, even though I was in the city center. Cats and dogs running around, underwear hung out to dry – it was exotic. I felt this place had a soul. From the very beginning I knew it needed to be given to artists.
Grażyna Kulczyk – a quote from the Stary Browar Spreading Wings brochure, 2007
Thsuki-no-hikari
(The Light of the moon)
MA monumental sculpture by Igro Mitoraj depicts part of human face modelled on statues of ancient heroes. Igor Mitoraj has become famous for his monumental sculptures exhibited in cities all around the world.
Untitled
The columns by Leon Tarasewicz are a unique work of contemporary Polish art. Created to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the city of Poznań, the installation was originally displayed on the columns of Poznań’s Teatr Wielki (The Opera house) which served as a “canvas sketcher” for the painting. The artist painted yellow and green stripes on 54 rings which later decorated the Opera House’s façade for a month. They now add life to the area around the escalator in the Atrium.
Conflict Between Good and Evil
“Conflict Between Good and Evil” by Piotr Kurka is a black-and-white marble bench featuring a statue of a raven sitting on the white side. The work illustrates the struggle between the dark and bright sides of the reality we experience. Piotr Kurka is an artist living and working in Poznań, a co-founder of the legendary group Koło Klipsa.
The Beer Mug
Made of bronze, the Beer Mug was designed by Wojciech Kujawski to celebrate the opening of the Shopping Arcade. The unveiling ceremony of this unusual sculpture was connected with the breaking of two Guiness World Records – for the largest beer mug in the world and for the most beer drunk of a single beer mug. On the outside, the mug depicts six small silhouettes trying to climb inside.
Citta Gentile
Alessandro Mendini is one of the most famous design artists in the world. He prepared the “Citta Gentile” (The Friendly City) installation especially for an exhibition held in Poznań in 2004 which inaugurated the launch of the Art Stations Foundation. The sculptures present the Mendini’s concept of public places as objects of powerful poetic expression with an abundance of colours and forms. Citta Gentile is not just sculptures – it is also a list of philosophical questions about the human condition, written down by the artist.
Henyo-Penyo Myomyonmyo
The sculpture Hnyo-Penyo Myomyonmyo is the work of Mr., who made his name on the international modern art scene as the author of little girls who resemble animated characters from the Manga cartoon characters (which he initially drew on the reverse of his regular bills). Inspired by animation, the artist employs such numerous techniques as drawing, painting and sculpture; he is also a performer.
Opertus Lunula Umbra
(Hidden Shadow of the Moon)
Choe U-Ram’s sculpture was created for the fifth Liverpool Biennale in 2008. Hidden Opertus Lunula Umbra was inspired by the observation of natural phenomena. Exposed in Shopping Arcade, the sculpture reveals great subtleness and attention to detail. Suspended in the air, its kinetic construction seems to be an organic form. The work is a continuation of the artist’s previous large-scale installations.
Relief of Façade
The Stary Browar Shopping Arcade façade is a joint work of the designers of ADS Studio and the sculptor Adam Garnek. The architects created a wavy façade, divided by several levels of horizontal stripes. The façade is enclosed on both sides by brick towers topped with glass cupolas. The interior features a light installation made up of mobile vertical elements, which, at night, transform the façade into a semi-transparent curtain shimmering in the dark.
Wavefunction
Wavefunction was first presented at the Venice Biennale in 2007. The installation by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer consists of several rows of chairs moved by a mechanism made of pistons, computers and cameras. In response to the audience, the chairs move like the waves referred to in the title. Originally from Mexico and working in Canada, the artist is famous for his interactive installations in public places.
Irrlichter
Set in the reception hall of Blow Up 5050, the installation “Irrlichter” consists of two longitudinal fluorescent lamps which swivel around and project light. The installation was designed by a German artist Sebastian Hempel who has received several artistic awards. Hempel is famous for installations dominated by movement as well as visual and spatial light effect.

Blow Up Commission
The Blow Up Commission was prepared by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer to fit the unique interiors of Blow Up 5050. The installation consists of two plasma screens, motion detectors, cameras and computers which interact with people moving in the interiors. Once their movement activates the system, the image is sent to the screens divided into tens of little squares creating a unique mosaic of simultaneous pictures.
